What is TPMS or Tire Pressure Monitoring System?

Do you know, according to US research, 75% of accidents in highways were due to insufficient tire pressure? There were a lot of road accidents that should have been avoided if only the drivers knew their tire condition.

Good thing, TPMS were made to help you! TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) is a handy device that will provide you real-time status of your car's tire pressure. It normally has a gauge where you can see the status in digital format.

Specially in the Philippines, there are a lot of factors that can affect tire's pressure. Some of these factors are the hot temperature, rough roads, and sometimes overloading. Some people are also not aware of the right pressure their tires should have. But need not to worry, the sticker that can be found usually on our car's door side is our guide for the proper tire pressure.

Following this guide can lengthen our tires lifespan too, so tire maintenance will be lessen. What could happen when our tires are too inflated or deflated?

Disadvantages of Underinflated Tires

Poor shape

Tire Failure

Tread life reduced to as much as 25%

Fuel Economy Reduction to 5%

Loss of steering precision and cornering stability

Disadvantages of Overinflated Tires

Stiff and Unyielding

Easily be damaged by road potholes of debris

Reduced road contact, dangerous on wet surfaces

Harsher Ride

There are two kinds of TPMS available at the moment, Indirect and Direct TPMS.

Indirect TPMS uses wheel speed sensors which doesn't really measure the pressure of the tires, but checking how fast each tires rotates. When a tire rotates faster than the usual, the computer will estimate that the tire is underinflated and automatically alerts the driver. On the other hand, Direct TPMS uses pressure monitoring sensors which can monitor or report the tire-pressure status real-time to the driver. It will also report if any of the tires are having leakage, or what their current temperature is.
